How to set up and change your Alarm access code

One of the most important pieces of information you'll need to use when working with your Alarm is your four digit access code. This article will explain what an access code is, as well as how to set up and change yours.

What is an access code?

An access code is a unique, four digit number that is assigned to an individual and used to arm and disarm the Alarm system via the Keypad. Individuals must enter their access code and then press Home, Away or Disarm to change modes using the Keypad. Everyone granted access to the Alarm system, whether as an owner or a Shared User, must have their own unique four digit access code.

Note: Access codes are never revealed in the Ring app, so if a Shared User or Alarm Guest User forgets their access code, he or she will need to ask the owner to reset the code.

Creating an owner's access code

Creating an owner's access code is a two-step process.

  • The owner must first set up their Alarm Base Station. Learn how to set up your Base Station in the Ring app.
  • Once the Base Station is set up, the owner must add their devices to the Base Station - specifically their Keypad. To add your Keypad to your Base Station, simply plug in your keypad and it will automatically add itself to the Base Station.

Once your Keypad is set up, you will be prompted to create a four digit owner's access code. Note that you will need to enter your new access code twice before saving.

Creating a Shared User and Alarm Guest User's access code

Shared Users and Alarm Guest Users are invited to the Alarm system on behalf of the owner.

How to add a Shared User

  1. In the Ring app, open the menu (≡)
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Shared Access, tap Add User and tap Shared User
  4. Enter the Shared User’s email address
  5. Toggle on the Alarm Base Station
  6. Tap Send Invite
    • Note: If a user already has a Ring account, they will automatically show up as a Shared User. If they do not have a Ring account, they will receive an invitation to create an account. Invitations are valid for seven days.

How to add an Alarm Guest User

  • In the Ring app, open the menu (≡)
  • Tap Settings
  • Tap Shared Access, tap Add User and tap Alarm Guest User
  • Enter the Alarm Guest User’s name
  • Create an access code
  • Tap Add Alarm Guest User

Once the Shared User or Alarm Guest User has been added, the access code must be shared with the new user verbally.

Access codes

Alarm system owners assign each user a unique, four digit access code. A user can use their access code to arm and disarm a Ring Alarm system using the Keypad. Once the Shared User or Alarm Guest User has been added, the access code must be shared with the new user verbally. Access codes cannot be duplicated or shared with any other users. Only owners can change access codes.

To change an access code:

  1. In the Ring app, open the menu (≡)
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Shared Access
  4. Tap a user
  5. Tap Reset access code
  6. Enter a new four digit code
  7. Tap Done
