The diode included with your Ring Video Doorbell (1st Generation) connects your Video Doorbell to an existing doorbell's digital doorbell (a doorbell with a speaker that plays a melody).
The diode should not be used with a mechanical doorbell (a traditional 'ding dong' bell with a mechanical striker inside), or if you're not hardwiring your Video Doorbell.
Note: Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation) does not need a diode. If there is no diode in the box, you most likely have the Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation), which has a built in-diode. Find out whether you have Ring Video Doorbell (1st generation) or Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Generation).
